Dreamers who do the work

Today’s ROAR value is ACCOUNTABLE, and our house is Rêveur, the House of Dreamers. Dr. King was born 98 years ago today — and he proved that a dream only matters when somebody shows up for it.

Today is Dr. King’s birthday! Our ROAR letter is A — Accountable, and our house is Rêveur, the House of Dreamers. What a perfect match!

Rêveur — the House of Dreamers!

Dr. King had a big dream. But a dream only comes true if you do something about it.

A dream plus hard work equals real change
Let’s talk
  • What is a dream YOU have? What’s one small step toward it?
  • Being accountable means saying “that was me.” Why is that brave?
  • Dr. King worked for many, many years. What helps you keep going when something is hard?
Lion Trivia

Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929. About how many years ago was that?

98 years ago! That’s older than most grandparents — and people still remember what he said.

[STAFF TRIVIA: add a question about a staff member — e.g., “Which teacher is in the Rêveur house?”]

Today’s ROAR value is Accountable, and our house is Rêveur, the blue House of Dreamers — on the birthday of history’s most famous dreamer.

Here’s the thing about “I Have a Dream”: it’s the most quoted speech in American history, and it’s often used to make King sound gentle and easy to agree with. The accountability in his message is what usually gets dropped.

The comfortable version and the real one HOW HE’S REMEMBERED A dreamer who hoped for a better world Nothing required of you WHAT HE ASKED FOR People to march, boycott, risk jail, and not wait Something required of everyone

He wasn’t asking people to agree. He was asking them to act.

Let’s talk
  • Why is it easier to celebrate a dreamer than to follow one?
  • Rêveur is the House of Dreamers. What separates a dreamer who changes things from one who doesn’t?
  • King said the time is always right to do what is right. What would it cost you to actually live by that?
Lion Trivia

MLK Day wasn’t always a holiday. It took years of campaigning after his death before it became a federal holiday. Roughly how long — 5 years, 15 years, or 30 years?

Reveal the answerHide the answer
About 15 years — King died in 1968, and the holiday was signed into law in 1983, first observed in 1986. It took even longer for every state to observe it. Fitting, isn’t it? Even the holiday honoring him required years of somebody doing the work.

[STAFF TRIVIA: add a question about a staff member — e.g., “Which staff member is serving in the community this weekend?”]
