Let’s remember how we do things here

Two weeks away is long enough to get out of the habit. So today we’re going back to the basics: R — O — A — R. What each one means, and what it looks like right now.

Welcome back! We are Orchard Knob Lions, and Lions ROAR. Here is what each letter means:

R Respectful Kind words. Listening ears. Gentle hands. O On Task Eyes on the teacher. Doing my own job. A Accountable Saying “that was me” and fixing it. R Responsible Cleaning up. Taking care of my things.

  • Which ROAR letter are you already really good at?
  • Which one will you work extra hard on this month?
  • What does Respectful look like in the hallway? Show me with your body!

Practice it right now! Let’s show what “On Task” looks like: eyes up, hands still, listening ears. Freeze… hold it… perfect. THAT is what I’ll be looking for all day.

Welcome back. Here’s something worth understanding before we reset: expectations aren’t arbitrary. Every one of them exists because of a reason. Learn the reason and you never have to memorize the rule.

Every rule has a reason behind it THE RULE Walk in the hallway THE REASON Blind corners. Someone smaller is coming. THE RULE One voice at a time THE REASON Two voices means nobody gets heard. THE RULE Clean up your space THE REASON Otherwise someone else has to do it.

Rules you understand are rules you don’t have to be reminded of.

Let’s talk
  • Pick any school expectation and name the reason behind it. Can you find one with no reason at all?
  • Two weeks off makes habits fade. Why is a habit easier to keep than to restart?
  • Semester 2 is a genuine fresh start. What’s one specific thing you’ll do differently — not a wish, a plan?

Almost every expectation traces back to one of three reasons: safety, learning, or fairness to others. If you can’t find the reason, ask — that’s a fair question. Habits are easier to keep than restart because repetition makes them automatic; break the chain and your brain has to do the hard work consciously again. That’s exactly why this week takes real effort.

Reason hunt! With a partner, pick three expectations at Orchard Knob and sort each one: is it about safety, learning, or fairness? If you find one that doesn’t fit any of the three, bring it to your teacher — that’s a real question worth asking.
