“Their name is today”

A teacher from a small mountain village in Chile became the first person from Latin America to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She spent her life insisting that children matter right now — not someday.

Meet Gabriela Mistral! She was a teacher and a poet from Chile. She wrote poems for children and won one of the biggest prizes in the whole world. She believed every child is important TODAY!

Say it with me! “¡Hoy!” (say: OY) — that’s Spanish for TODAY. Now shout it: “¡Mi nombre es hoy!” — “My name is today!”

Gabriela Mistral — a Chilean poet, educator, and diplomat. She began teaching in rural schools as a teenager, and in 1945 became the first Latin American writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. These words come from her essay Su Nombre es Hoy (“His Name is Today”), arguing that children’s needs can never be postponed.
