Math of the Day

Stick with the tricky ones!

Mathematicians know that the hardest problems are often the most interesting ones. When a problem feels tough, that’s your brain growing! Today, let’s practice not giving up.

Counting challenge: Let’s count backwards from 10 to 0 — that’s trickier than counting up! Ready? 10, 9, 8…

Let’s talk
  • Was counting backwards harder than counting forwards? Why do you think so?
  • What is a math thing you’re still practicing?
Try it

Blast off! Count backwards from 5 to 0 with a partner, then jump up and shout “Blast off!” Try it again even faster!

Brain stretcher: A farmer has 17 sheep. All but 9 run away. How many sheep does the farmer have left?

Reveal the answerHide the answer
9! “All but 9 ran away” means 9 stayed. Read carefully — the tricky part isn’t the math, it’s the words!
Let’s talk
  • Did you jump straight to subtracting? Why do tricky word problems fool us?
  • What’s a good strategy when a math problem confuses you the first time?
Try it

With a partner, reread the problem out loud slowly, one sentence at a time. Notice how reading carefully changes what you see. That’s a strategy you can use on every test!
