Focus is a gift you give

Today’s ROAR value is ON TASK, and our house is Altruismo, the House of Givers. Here’s the connection: when you focus, you’re not just helping yourself — you’re protecting everyone else’s learning too.

Today’s ROAR letter is O — On Task! And our house is Altruismo, the House of Givers.

Being On Task means doing the job you’re supposed to be doing. Here is what it looks like:

Four ways to show On Task: eyes watching, ears listening, hands working, voice quiet
Let’s talk
  • Which of these four is easiest for you? Which is hardest?
  • When someone talks while the teacher is talking, how does that make learning harder for YOU?
  • Staying on task is a gift to your class. What other gifts can you give without money?
Lion Trivia

Our Altruismo house name comes from Portuguese. What country is Altruismo connected to?

Reveal the answerHide the answer
Brazil! That’s where Portuguese is spoken. Remember Pelé, the soccer star we learned about? He was Brazilian too!

[STAFF TRIVIA: add a question about a staff member — e.g., “Which teacher is in the Altruismo house?”]

Today’s ROAR value is On Task, and our house is Altruismo, the black House of Givers, rooted in Brazilian heritage.

Here’s the part most people miss about focus: distraction spreads. One off-task choice pulls in the people around it — which is why being on task is genuinely a form of giving.

One choice, more than one effect one choice You miss the directions Neighbors look over Teacher stops and restarts Everyone loses time

Focus protects the whole room, not just you.

Let’s talk
  • Trace the diagram. How many people are affected by one off-task moment?
  • Research says it takes several minutes to fully refocus after being interrupted. What does that mean across a whole day?
  • Altruismo says power comes from lifting others up. How is focus a way of doing that?
Lion Trivia

Altruismo’s crest features a creature with an eagle’s head and a lion’s body. Name it — and name what it represents.

Reveal the answerHide the answer
A griffin — representing both strength and grace, fierceness and nurturing. A giver needs both.

[STAFF TRIVIA: add a question about a staff member — e.g., “Which staff member never gets distracted?”]
