Words worth saying out loud

Gratitude that stays in your head helps you. Gratitude you actually say helps someone else. Before break, let’s practice putting thanks into words.

Word of the Day: THANKFUL. Being thankful means noticing something good — and saying so out loud!

I am thankful for because

The word “because” is the magic part!

Let’s talk
  • Fill in the blanks out loud: “I am thankful for ______ because ______.”
  • Who is someone at school you could thank today?
  • What is one thing you’re excited about over the break?

Thank a neighbor! Turn to the person beside you and finish this sentence: “I’m thankful you’re in our class because ______.” Then let them do it back to you!

Making gratitude land NAME IT “Thanks for everything.” Fine, but vague SAY WHAT “Thanks for helping me study.” Better — specific SAY THE EFFECT “…and I passed. That mattered.” Strongest

Harjo’s poem points to interconnection — that you’re not separate from other people or from the world. Naming the effect works because it proves you actually noticed. Anyone can say “thanks”; only you can say “that changed this for me.”

Break assignment! Pick one person you’ll see over the break. Before you come back, tell them one specific thing they did and what it changed for you. Not a card — out loud. We’ll ask how it went when we return.
