Science of the Day

Our amazing five senses!

Your body has five senses that gather information about the world all day long — even when you don’t notice them working.

We have five senses that help us explore: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch!

Five cards showing the five senses: see, hear, smell, taste, and touch
Let’s talk
  • Close your eyes and listen carefully. What sounds do you hear right now?
  • Which sense helps you know if a cookie is yummy?
Try it

Sense detective! Close your eyes and listen for 10 seconds. Then share one sound you noticed with a partner.

Your brain takes in information through your five senses every single second — even when you don’t notice.

Let’s talk
  • Which sense do you rely on the most, and why?
  • Which sense would be the hardest to live without? Explain your thinking.
Try it

With a partner, test your hearing: one person closes their eyes while the other quietly makes a sound somewhere nearby. Can they point to where it came from? That’s your hearing working like a scientist’s tool!
