Books are mirrors AND windows

Some books are mirrors — you look in and see yourself. Others are windows — you look through and see a life different from your own. We need both, and a new quarter is the perfect time to find some.

Meet Jacqueline Woodson! She writes books for kids. When she was little, she was a slow reader — but she loved stories so much she grew up to write more than 40 books. She wanted every child to find themselves in a book.

Words of the Day: MIRROR and WINDOW. A mirror book shows someone like YOU. A window book shows someone different from you. Both are wonderful!

Mirror or window? Hold your hands up like a mirror in front of your face. Now open them wide like a window. When I name a book, show me which kind you think it is!

Jacqueline Woodson — award-winning author of more than 40 books, including Brown Girl Dreaming, which won the National Book Award. She served as National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. As a child in Brooklyn she went to the library every day after school, and says a fifth-grade teacher telling her “This is really good” made her believe in herself.

  • Why does it matter for a kid to find a book where a character looks or lives like them?
  • Why do we also need window books — stories about people unlike us?
  • One teacher’s comment changed how Woodson saw herself. Has anyone ever said something that changed how you saw yourself?

Audit your shelf! Think of the last three books you read. Were they mirrors, windows, or both? If they were all one kind, make it your Quarter 2 goal to find the other.
