Tomorrow begins Hispanic Heritage Month!

Starting tomorrow, our country spends a month celebrating the culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans — families with roots in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. Every culture makes our community richer!

A culture is the food, music, language, and traditions a family shares. Tomorrow we start celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month — and our own Amistad house name comes from Spanish!

Let’s practice a greeting! Turn to your neighbor and say “¡Hola, amigo!” or “¡Hola, amiga!” That means “Hello, friend!” in Spanish.

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 — and there’s a reason it starts in the middle of the month instead of the first.

September 15 is Independence Day for five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua! Mexico celebrates on September 16, and Chile on September 18.

With a partner, name as many countries as you can where Spanish is spoken. Then pick one you’d like to learn more about this month — we’ll be exploring several!
