Data tells a story!

Mathematicians collect data — information — and use it to find patterns and answer questions. Today we’re going to collect some data right here in our classroom!

We can use graphs to show information! A graph helps us see which group has more or fewer.

Here is another class’s graph. Now let’s make our own!

Let’s talk
  • Look at the picture. Which bar is taller — summer or winter? How can you tell?
  • Now OUR turn! This or That: summer or winter? Stand up for summer, stay seated for winter!
  • Let’s count our class — which group has more? Which has fewer?

Use your fingers to show how many friends chose summer. Now show how many chose winter. Which number is bigger? Did our class pick the same favorite as the class in the picture?

Mathematicians use tally charts to quickly collect and organize data. First let’s read one, then we’ll build our own.

Let’s talk
  • Read the sample chart: why are tally marks grouped in fives instead of drawn one at a time?
  • In that class, 14 of 22 chose summer. Is that closer to half the class, or closer to all of it?
  • Now OUR turn! This or That: summer or winter? Raise your hand for summer, thumbs up for winter.

Teacher: tally your own class’s votes on the board, then fill in the totals here. Summer: ____ — Winter: ____ — out of ____ students.

With a partner, write OUR class results as a fraction. Then compare: did our class lean the same way as the sample class, or different? Two classes, two answers — that’s why mathematicians collect their own data instead of guessing.
