Measuring our world!

Mathematicians use measurement to compare things and understand the world around them. From how tall you are to how far you can jump — measurement helps us make sense of size!

We can measure things using non-standard units — like our hands, feet, or even crayons!

Let’s talk
  • Hold up your hand! How many hands tall do you think our classroom door is?
  • This or That: are you taller or shorter than your teacher’s desk?

Use your hand span to measure your desk! Place your hand flat and count how many hand spans wide it is. Compare with a partner — did you get the same number?

Measurement riddle: I have 12 inches, and rulers are made of me. What unit of measurement am I?

When to use inches, feet, and miles

  • When would you use inches vs. feet vs. miles? Give a real-life example of each.
  • This or That: would you rather measure in metric (centimeters, meters) or standard units (inches, feet)? Why?

Estimate the length of your desk in inches, then in centimeters. Which number is bigger and why? Share your estimates with a partner before you check!
