Five words changed his life

A shy third-grader sat silent in class until his teacher asked him to sing — then told him, “You have a beautiful voice.” Those five words started him on a path to becoming the first Latino Poet Laureate of the United States.

Meet Juan Felipe Herrera! His Mexican family picked crops in the fields, moving from place to place. He was very shy at school. One day his teacher said, “You have a beautiful voice” — and he grew up to become a famous poet!

Word of the Day: VOICE. Your voice is how you share what’s inside you. Everybody’s voice matters!

What is one kind thing YOU could say to a friend today?

Use your voice! Turn to a neighbor and say loud and proud: “¡Tengo una voz hermosa!” — that means “I have a beautiful voice!” Now say it to yourself.

Juan Felipe Herrera — the son of Mexican migrant farm workers and the first Latino U.S. Poet Laureate. He grew up traveling California in tents and trailers, learned poetry from his mother’s songs and stories, and has written more than 30 books — many for children, in both English and Spanish.
